Reports spread in early October 2026 that a Russian lab worker may have died of the pneumonic plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The pneumonic plague "has a nearly 100% case-fatality rate when untreated," according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
